Continued from Ubuntu Codenames demystified (part 1)

1) After Ubuntu 6.06, came Ubuntu 6.10 and was codenamed Edgy Eft. An Eft is basically a newt which is of the salamander family, that lives in the water as an adult. In the picture below, you can see a red-spotted newt in it`s eft stage showing bright colouration to warn predators of its highly toxic skin.

2) Next came Ubuntu 7.04 and was codenamed Fiesty Fawn. A Fawn is a term generally used to describe a young deer of a species, just like for most deer the male is called a buck and the female is a doe, but terminology varies according to the size of the species. For many medium-sized deer the male is a stag and the female a hind. You can see a fawn in the picture below:

3) Next in line was Ubuntu 7.10, codenamed Gutsy Gibbon.  Gibbons are the small apes in the family Hylobatidae. Also called the lesser apes, gibbons differ from great apes (chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and humans) in being smaller and in not making nests, and in certain anatomical details in which they superficially more closely resemble monkeys than great apes do.

4) After 7.10, came 8.04 and was codenamed Hardy Heron. A Heron is a wading bird in the Ardeidae family. Although herons resemble birds in some other families, such as the storks, ibises and spoonbills, they differ from these in flying with their necks retracted, not outstretched. They are also one of the bird groups that have powder down.

5) As on the date of writing this article, the latest stable release of Ubuntu is 8.10 and is codenamed Intrepid Ibex. An ibex (plural ibices) is an individual of any of several species of wild mountain goats, distinguished by the male’s large recurved horns which are transversely ridged in front. Ibices are found in Europe, Asia and Switzerland.
