highlighting and the colour scheme of vi editor does not catch the fancy of many. The easiest way to fix this is to turn off the syntax highlight feature of vim. We will now tell you how to turn off the highlighting in the Vim editor.

1. Enter the command line mode of vim editor by hitting escape key.

2. Now enter the following command to turn off syntax highlighting (carefully note the colon at the beginning)

:syntax off

3. If you wish to turn the colors and highlighting back on just type while in the command mode

:syntax on

4. Thus you can toggle between the syntax highlighting feature of vim editor.

However this is not a permanent solution. If you want to disable the syntax highlighting of vim permanentlyyou have to edit the vim config file:~/.vimrc located in your home directory. Open the~/.vimrc file in your favourite text editor and add the following line in order to disable the syntax highlighting feature of vim editor, permanently:

syntax off
