Opera 10 – Finally a browser for linux that is NOT sluggish

By on September 3rd, 2009

opera-10Well, many of us have already faced this problem of browsers acting sluggish and heavy on Linux over time. And then there is the famous memory leak problem with Firefox browser on linux. But with the new Opera 10, things have definitely changed a lot. "Sluggish" is a word not to be found in the Opera dictionary.

Opera 10 features various new enhancements that make your browsing experience much better on Linux. Opera has an enhanced javascript feature called Browser JavaScript. Now many websites have javascripts that is run by your browser and there is a possibility that the scripts might be heavily resource hungry. Now this new Browser Javascript feature allows Opera to automatically fix incompatible Web pages, outdated and resource consuming scripts and pages that tend to block Opera. This to a great extent helps opera to be not sluggish on Linux.

Opera 10 also has the Turbo technology which is very useful to users on a low speed internet connection. On enabling this feature, Opera gives up to eight times faster Web surfing over slow connections than other browsers. You might like to read this article on how to enable Turbo for Opera.

Thanks to Opera, the browsers on Linux are now very light, slug free and completely low on your system resources immaterial of the fact how how many javascript intensive websites you open.

PS: Opera 10 is available for almost all Operating Systems out there!

    Oh please, come on…

I’ve been using Opera 10 on both a Mac and a Linux PC, and have to say, its out dated, there is innovation there, but the new kid on the block has already surpassed opera on speed and its beta.

the opera team need to bring themselves into the 20th centruy, and stop languishing in the 1990′s

There is the potential here to be a great browser, but for its constant innovation, it always gets done better on Firefox, Safari of (gulp!) IE

There are many examples of being first in the it industry, and where you find those stories, you always find someone who does it better.

Also, this “speed increase” its blarny, you are in reality talking 2 or 3 seconds at most..

i don’t quite understand how you can call a browser (Opera here) with “constant innovation” (using your own words) outdated. Agreed, it doesn’t as many users as Firefox or IE (solely because it comes with Windows). However, opera is anything but outdated.
And about the speed, its javascript engine is faster than Firefox, which tends to be very sluggish at times.
And another thing, i think you should have written 21st century not 20th century.
btw how long have you been using Opera 10?;)

    @therealdavidfield:
Let’s put things into perspective. If you care only about rendering speed, responsiveness and overall performance Chrome comes on top. If you also care about features and download size and if you estimate the performance per features available per size, at least for me, opera is the winner. In the end it’s all about your needs and how a browser fulfills those

I recently downloaded Opera 10, and so far, I am enjoying the new look, the tab feature (where you can drag the bar down to show the webpages without hovering over the tabs for a few seconds), and Opera turbo (I don’t have the fastest internet connection at home). I really love how opera did their speed dial; I really like the 4×3 on safari’s top sites, but now that opera has it (it’s easier to use opera speed dial than safari’s), i don’t think i’ll be using safari anytime soon… at least for awhile as I try out all of opera’s functions.

    good job, opera!

Although Opera Turbo doesn’t work at times, still it is a great feature indeed.

I absolutely admire the Opera 10 internet browser from Opera Software Inc. I firmly believe the Vikings have finally cracked open a genie out of the bottle.

The Opera 10 internet browsers is so well thought and designed very beautifully so that even a beginner can have a crack at and have so much fun. After all it is a mobile browser design for the well connected mobile community from around the world.
