How To Install Thunderbird 3 Shredder in Ubuntu 9.10

thunderbird3

Mozilla’s email client Thunderbird 3 was released just a few days back. In the release page, however only the .tar file was available for Linux. In this post we will show you how to install Thunderbird 3 in Ubuntu 9.10 from the Mozilla PPA.

  • Add the Mozilla PPA in your source list using:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa

  • Update source list using:

sudo apt-get update

  • Install Thunderbird 3 using:

sudo apt-get install thunderbird-3.0

It is advised that you remove the repository from the source list after the installation. If you do not know how to do it, here is how:

  • In Terminal, execute the command,

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.d/sourceubuntu-mozilla-daily-ppa-karmic.list

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.d/ubuntu-mozilla-daily-ppa-karmic.list.save

sudo apt-get update

  • Save and close the file. Done.

So I have followed the above instructions to the T - cannot see any new email icon anywhere on my desktop; only Empathy & Evolution exist.

Uhm, sorry, how do i "disable the said repository after the installation"? thanx in advance!
  • Ricky
I have added the part on how to disable the repository in the article. :)

When you use the add-apt-repository command, it does not add a line in /etc/apt/sources.list, it creates entries in /etc/apt/sources.d. You can remove the source by doing 'sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.d/ubuntu-mozilla-daily-ppa* && aptitude udpate'

This also ruins your Firefox installation if you ever run update manager. Don't bother with this.
  • Ricky
That is because your firefox updates will come from the Mozilla Daily PPA, which can be unstable.
To preserve your Firefox installation, disable the said repositoty after the installation.

  • Thanks for this!

Yes very useful!! This worked perfectly for me... I love the IMAP speed in Thunderbird as opposed to Evolution... looks like evolution is going to need to grow some adaptations or it might be naturally selected against =P
