Vimeo also jumps in the HTML5 bandwagon

By on January 22nd, 2010

After YouTube announced its new HTML5 roll out, it is now Vimeo's turn to announce that they are also implementing HTML5  experimentally (read beta).

Just like that with YouTube, the supported browsers listed by Vimeo are - Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer with Chrome Frame installed. No mention is made of Opera and Firefox although the latest builds of both supports HTML5.

The HTML5 player, according to Vimeo, will be available to 90% of the videos uploaded in the last one year. However, viewing the video in fullscreen mode is not possible. This is a limitation of the browsers and will, hopefully, be addressed soon.

To enable the HTML5 player, all that the users have to do is click on the "Switch to HTML5 player" below any video.

You’ve made a basic mistake. HTML5 may specify how a video is presented in a webpage, but it doesn’t specify what format the video is in.
Right now, there are 3 possible formats, the patent encumbered H.264, OGG and the recently released by Google WebM. Right now, there is a push for WebM since it’s an open format and Google (who own YouTube) are behind it, but Microsoft and Apple (who make IE and Safari) want the H.264 codec to be successful even though it’s a propriatary format that, depending on what you do with it, may require a payment to the company that owns it (MPEG-LA). Firefox for instance won’t support the H.264 codec as it means that anyone using Firefox’s code to make a new browser, or porting Firefox to another platform, may find themselves legally required to pay money to MPEG-LA unless they remove H.264 support from their version.

Given the browsers you’ve mentioned, Vimeo is likely using the H.264 codec.

      Hey Sofox!

Thanks for clarifying it and rectifying my mistake. Much appreciated :-)
