CodeWeaver has released a new version of its popular application CrossOver. CrossOver is an application for Linux, Mac OS X using which you can run Windows applications. It is an improved version of Wine, the free software that allows Windows applications to run in Linux. The new version Crossover 9, codenamed "Snow Mallard" brings with it a new and simpler-to-use interface and support for more products.
Supported Windows applications in the CrossOver 9 includes Microsoft Office (from Office 97 to Office 2007), Internet Explorer 6 and 7, Outlook 2002 to 2007, some versions of Photoshop and Photoshop CS. CodeWeaver releases different versions of CrossOver - CrossOver Standard and CrossOver Professional. Both of them come with either the Mac version or the Linux version. CrossOver Professional includes multi-user license and CrossOver Games. CrossOver Games has been optimized for running Windows based games and includes support for DirectX.
CodeWeaver is the main supporter of the open-source Wine project and their commercial product CrossOver relies on Wine to run the Windows application. What CrossOver does is automates the installation and setting up so that you do not have to do them manually as is the case with Wine.
