tumblr logoA few days ago, the official Tumblr app for Android devices was released. In this post, we take a quick look at the app. Incidentally the app is developed by the same team behind the iOS app.

Installation

Set Up

When you start the application for the first time, you will be presented with the settings page. There is really nothing here. Just enter the email id you use with your Tumblr account and the password. After that click on Check Account and you will see if you have entered the details correctly or not. Close the Settings after that. You can always access this later.

Although the settings seems very spartan, I quite like it. It is simple and there is nothing confusing here.

The Dashboard

The Dasboard is what you would expect from a normal (the web) Tumblr Dashboard. You get updates from all those you are following and you can reblog or like their posts. (Touch and hold on a post for the Like/Reblog to come up.)

The Dashboard does not seem to auto-update. It has to be updated it manually from the menu. There is also no way to see the tracked tags or to search Tumblr. I don't care much about the auto-update but I use the tracked tags a lot and I miss it. Maybe we will get those in a future update.

Posting a new Post with the app is a breeze. All you have to do is select the type of post and well, type what you want to post. If you want to include a picture or a video, you can either record it, use an existing one or use an existing one by entering the URL.

The advanced posting options, which are available with the web interface, are also available in the app.

Conclusion

This is definitely the best Tumblr app. It is extremely simple to use and everything does what they are supposed to do.

True there are certain features that I would like to have, but this is just the first release and I cannot really complain about those. Anyway it does what it is supposed to do - post to Tumblr, like, reblog etc. really easy.

It is definitely a must-have app for those who want Tumblr on the go.
