No Need Get Excited About Steam On Linux Again!

By on September 2nd, 2010

The Steam on Linux rumor is up and running again.

A couple of weeks ago, Valve has officially made it clear that they are not developing a Steam client for Linux. This came as a big surprise for a lot of people who had been expecting it, after all there were reports of the Mac client containing Linux codes.

Well, whatever those codes are doing there, Valve has made it pretty clear that they are not working on a Linux port of Steam at that moment. I see no reason to question what Valve has said. They have never lied straight at our faces as far as I can remember.

Anyway, it seems like people still want to believe that Valve is working on Steam. They are now referring to a job posting in the Valve website which says one of the responsibilities is "Port Windows-based games to the Linux platform". Here is a screenshot:

Sounds like they are indeed looking to start working on Linux, right? Well here is the bummer - That posting has been there for three years. Yes it is not a new posting, it has been just lying there for three longs years. You can check it here if you want -> Internet Archive Way Back Machine.

This started probably after someone posted that in Reddit and in reply someone also pointed out that it is three years old, with the link I just posted above.

Yes I know that we want to have Steam in Linux. But rather than getting excited, this makes me sad. The fact that the job posting has been there for three years means that either Valve is not hiring anyone (Then why put up the job posting? To please the Linux community?) or that no one is applying. Either way this does not mean anything in the current circumstances, I am afraid.

Valve might bring Steam on Linux in the future. They have not said that they will never develop it. But right now, there is nothing to be excited about.

What do you think about this? Leave a comment.

If they really wanted Steam on Linux they would probably do it with help from Codeweavers or Cedega (Cider). What good would a native client be if there are no games to distribute ?

I don’t know much about Cider but doesn’t Codeweaver still have problems with some of the latest games?

If Valve releases a Steam client for Linux, they would probably also port some games. That is what is exciting most of the people IMO.

Cider is the technology EA uses to “port” games to Mac. Indeed, CxGames may have some problems, however the ones close to gamers’ hearts work well. For the time being, I believe that it would be easier for game developers to fix quirks in Wine than porting their whole codebase to Linux…

I personally use DJL Game Manager in Ubuntu, which is a Steam alternative.

    WHO CARES?
No gamer plays on PC anymore, its about the console…

I even got rid of the WIndow partition a while back because most games I want dont come out on PC (Im looking at you EA MMA).

I would have cared about 3-5 years ago…. now… they can rot for all I care.
Games are played on a 52 inch screen now.
Not one half the size or smaller.

    Bye.

i know that this story is old but i want to point out something… when portal was comeing out they put out advertiseing material that had hints about some things portal would have hidden in it, they would deny things that the material proved… this mayy be the same tatic. they knew that linux users would pour over the mac releace looking for things like this… after all osx isnt that much different internally ive heard that ports are easy between linux and the mac so its not impossible to port them, the job may have been filled and the job post left there as a scream for attention as a starting point.. im sure theres a way to put these togather just like the portal puzzles
