CentOS Linux 6.0 Released

CentOS Linux has come a long way from being a free RedHat Linux clone to becoming one of the mostly used free enterprise class linux distributions of today. The CentOS team just announced the availability of CentOS Linux version 6.0 for both i386 and x86_64 architectures.

CentOS 6.0 is based on the upstream release of RHEL 6.0 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) and includes packages from all variants. All upstream repositories have been combined into just the one repository in order to make it easier for end users to work with.

Given the fact that upstream has a 6.1 version released already CentOS will be using a Continous Release repository for 6.0 to bring all 6.1 and post 6.1 security updates to all 6.0 users.

Here is a list of various Media (CDs and DVDs) that will be available in order to install CentOS 6.0:

Users can attempt installing CentOS 6.0 using LiveCDs and LiveDVDs for i386 and x86_64 which will be released in few days. However, for users who are looking to upgrade to CentOS 6.0 from CentOS 4.0 or 5.0 are recommended to run a complete reinstall instead rather than attempting an inplace upgrade.

Minimal Install CD – This CD will help users to set up a base machine with just enough content to have a usable platform.

LightWeightServer (LWS) CD – As the name suggests, this media will help users to setup a basic web server using CentOS 6.0. This media basically aims to bring back the CentOS-4 Server CD style single iso image.
