BitTorrent, the company behind the global peer-to-peer file sharing protocol that enabled users to download content easily has now forayed into personal file sharing with the launch if its new file sharing application called Share. The aim of Share is to give users an alternative to paid cloud storage services and also media sharing over social networks.

With this application, one can transfer files of any size without limits to an unlimited number of personal contacts. And since files are cached on the cloud, users don’t have to be online to complete the file transfers.

Share is perfect for sharing photos, videos and other content with friends and family without having to worry about size constraints. And what’s more, this service is absolutely free. All one needs to do is log onto www.getshareapp.com and download the application onto the computer and begin sharing.

The service has super fast downloads owing to the fact that it is build of an existing innovative file-sharing technology used by almost 100 million people a month. Users do not have to worry about privacy as the application is extremely secure, with the user getting having the ability to decide who gets to view his/her files. Sharing files also become interactive and social with Share, as friends can comment on your shared files in real time.

The company is relying on Amazon’s EC2 and S3 services to provide caching infrastructure for Share, said BitTorrent Chief Strategist Shahi Ghanem. The app will initially be available only for Windows users, but Mac users will be able to download an alpha version of the uTorrent client, offering the same functionality.

BitTorrent is not the first company trying to combine P2P and personal file sharing, but its unlimited file size feature could attract more users than other services such as Pando, a company offering similar features but limits the size of files to be transferred to save hosting costs. BitTorrent plans to avoid this challenge by building its own P2P- powered personal cloud storage system. The idea is that users can get free storage for their files by sharing some hard disk space and bandwidth with other users.
