fedora logoA default installation of Fedora 10 will boot you into the Graphical User Interface (GUI) Mode (unless you havent opted for installing the X1-GUI packages). In case you are running only a server out of your Fedora 10 box you might want you computer to be started only in the text mode. For forcing your Fedora 10 system to start in the text mode, you need to follow these steps:

1. open in a text editor, the file named inittab located in the /etc/ folder. You would neet root privileges to edit this file.

2. locate the line which starts with the keyword id: (If your computer is configured to start in GUI mode, then you would probably find this line to be id:5:inittdefault:)

3. Change the number 5 to number 3 in the line that starts with the keyword id: , as described in the previous step.

4. Save the file and reboot your computer.

Check the screenshot below for further details.

NOTE: These numbers are technically termed as RUNLEVELS. The directive id: takes 7 values, starting from 0 through 6. Below we have listed the effect on your computer etc inittab screenshotbootup/shutdown pertaining to each number.

0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
1 - Single user mode
2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
3 - Full multiuser mode
4 - unused
5 - X11
6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
