utorrentlogo This morning the uTorrent.com server was hacked and the windows installer was replaced by a malware. According to the BitTorrernt blog, the incident happened at 4:20 am PDT and it was discovered at around 6:00 am PDT.

According to the blog, the malware is a fake antivirus – also known as a scareware. It pops up a warning that a virus has been detected and asks the user for payment to remove it.

The latest versions of utorrent has an auto update feature. Right now it is not clear if the auto updates could be affected by this incident.

The exact number of users who were affected is not known right now but considering the popularity of utottent, it could be quite a lot. If you had downloaded utorrent between 4:20 am and 6:00 am PDT (that is between 11:20 am to 1:00 pm GMT), you should run an antivirus scan.
