Sify Technologies Brings Consumer Cloud Computing To India For The First Time
Indian ISP Sify Technologies is planning to leverage its already existing 1200+ cyber cafes to offer a suite of cloud computing applications aimed at users who do not own computers or have internet access at home. The service is branded as "Sify mylife".
According to a report by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), and research firm IMRB International, about 37 percent of the internet users in India use it through cyber cafes.
Sify believes that for these users word using the softwares in a software-as-as-service model is preferable rather than owningprocessing, spreadsheet, presentation, and page layout software who would prefer to use the software in a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, rather than buy a license themselves. This is where Sify plans to step in and offer softwares like word processors, spreadsheets etc. through their already existing cyber cafes.
Cyber cafe owners can connect to Sify mylife either through a Sify broadband connection or a specially designed ‘Sify Edge device'. Sify mylife will also be accessible through Sify home broadband, Sify.com, mobile phones and other cloud connection devices soon.
Sify is also launching a service that will allow people to purchase travel tickets, entertainment and educational services, as well as pay utility bills online without using their credit cards. Customers simply have to pay in cash to the cyber cafes for the service. They have already tied up with over 20 partners including IRCTC and Yatra.
Sify has reveled anything about the technical details of how this is to be implemented.
Do you think that this new move by Sify will succeed?
