Bricscad is one of the best alternatives to AutoCAD which supports the DWG file format. A few days ago, Bricsys, the company behind Bricscad, announced that a Linux version of Bricscad V10 is now available.

Bricscad V10 for Linux comes immediately with the complete LISP, DCL and Diesel API’s. According to Bricsys, over 500 third party application developers are in the process of porting their applications. Bricsys plan to wait for sometime to see the demand from developers before extending the APIs available in the Linux version.

This is what Erik De Keyser, CEO of Bricsys, said:

We consider Bricscad V10 for Linux as a milestone for our company. Despite doubts of many about the viability of a native Linux based professional CAD product, we are convinced that there is a strong demand for it and a huge potential for applications.

Currently Bricscad V10 is supported only for three distributions - Ubuntu 9.10 or higher, Fedora 12 or higher and OpenSuse 11.1 or higher.

Bricscad V10 is a paid application. You can download the 30 days trial version for free. The full version, however, cost $395.
