Nautilus-Elementary is a patched version of Nautilus, the default file manager in GNOME. It is by far one of the slickest patches for Nautilus and looks a lot better than vanilla Nautilus. It was included in our 7 Things To Do After Installing Ubuntu 10.10.

Well, words are coming out that the Elementary team has decided to discontinue Nautilus-elementary. Instead of that they will now focus on developing a new file manager named Marlin. It is developed with GTK3 and GNOME 3 technologies.

The reason specified for this decision is that they want to create a file manager which does everything they want it to do. Does it have something to with Nautilus-Elementary being called a “hack” in the recently concluded Ubuntu Developer Summit? Probably.

Marlin is being developed in Launchpad and it can be quite sometime before we see a stable release.
