Amarok is one of the most widely used music players in Linux. But there is this weird problem with Amarok in Ubuntu (and Kubuntu) as right after you install Amarok in Ubuntu or Kubuntu, you won’t be able to play MP3 files directly even if you have installed the required media codecs. In this article we will tell you how to play MP3 files (add MP3 support) in amarok in both ubuntu and kubuntu. 

Step 1: Install the libxine1-ffmpeg package using the command in a shell (terminal):

 sudo apt-get install libxine1-ffmpeg

You can also install the package using your preferred package manager like Synaptic or Adept. This package provides the required MP3 playback support to your Amarok and you can now play all your MP3 files.

Step 2 (Optional): Install the kubuntu-restricted-extras package using the command in the terminal:

 sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras

This package basically installs MP3 support for the included MusicBrainz tagging feature in Amarok and also installs the k3b MP3 plugin.
