Browser Speed Test – Opera’s Claim Put To The Test

By on July 1st, 2010

Both Opera and Google are obsessed with the speed of their browser. With each release, each claim to be the fastest browser. Google has even gone on to make a game to demonstrate the speed of its browser Chrome. With today's release of Opera 10.60, Opera is now claiming that it is the fastest browser on earth. So, we decided to see if it is indeed the fastest browser or if it is Google Chrome. We also decided to throw in the latest dev build of Chromium and Firefox 4.0 beta to the test.

The Browsers and The Test

So here is the list of the browsers we are going to be testing:

  • Opera 10.60
  • Google Chrome 5.0.375.86
  • Chromium 6.0.452.0
  • Firefox 4.0 beta

We are going to put these browsers through the SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark and the V8 Benchmark Suite.

SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark

Without further ado, here is the result of the SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark for the different sections:

Remember that in this test lower score is better.

Ok obviously, Firefox 4.0 beta is out of its league here. Except for one test it is the slowest in every test. But after our review of Firefox 4.0 Beta earlier, we expected this and this is nothing surprising.

Now the real competition is between Opera, Chrome and Chromium. However, Chromium is consistently getting good scores while Opera and Chrome does not do well in some tests.

Anyway, here is the final score found out by adding all the scores of the various test. Remember lower scores means faster.

From the final score, we can clearly see that Opera is faster than Google Chrome. But the fastest browser in this test is the dev version of Chromium, and by quite a margin. As expected, Firefox did not do very well.

V8 Benchmark Suite

In this test, higher scores are better unlike in the previous one. A browser which has higher score is faster than one with lower score.

Here is the result:

As you can clearly see, Chromium blows away he entire competition here. Except for one test, in which it came second, it has managed to score the maximum points in every test. Another thing is that Google Chrome just scores more than Opera in just about every test. As expected, Firefox was never a competition.

If we look at the final score (last one from left), Chromium has clearly is clearly the fastest browser by some margin. It is also interesting to note that Chrome managed to outperform Opera by quite a margin here.

Conclusion

In both of the tests, Chromium has managed to outperform the competition by quite a margin. So, Chromium 6.0.452.0 is the fastest of the browsers we have tested. However it is a tough decision between Opera 10.60 and Google Chrome 5.0.375.86. Opera is faster in the SunSpider test and Chrome is better in the V8 test. So, we will leave it at that. We call it a draw  between the two.

So, is Opera 10.60 the fastest browser on earth? The answer is "No". Opera 10.60 has improved a lot but Chromium is a hell of a lot faster than it. Some may argue that I was using a dev version of Chromium. Well not everyone would use the dev version but it is still a browser, and a very fast one at that.

  • Another incomplete article :P

    Safari, anyone?

      No Safari for Linux.

    • Name

Besides, about a week ago another website did an article simliar to this on Windows where they included Safari in the mix, and it was slower even than Firefox.

  • nobody particular

This confirms my ‘sense’ of the speeds after using these browsers. The other big advantage of Chromium is that you can (if using a popular Linux like Ubuntu) pull it from repositories.

      I second you, Mr. Nobody

Using sunspider is the only fair test.

It wasn’t made by Opera or Google.

The V8 test was made by Google so of course their browser does well in it.

I’m sure Opera could make a decent benchmark where it crushes Chromium.

Stick to sunspider for the most accurate/air results.

With that being said, Opera is the fastest.

Check out the latest Opera 10.70 build 3483

It’s even faster than 10.60 is.

Ah, is Opera 10.60 the fastest browser on earth = no.

At least not on Linux, the Opera developers themselves did say that Windows speed’s >Linux speed’s

Try to benchmark chrome 6 and opera 10.70, and on multiple platform please..
    :)

I did Windows ones recently, though my main OS is Linux, can get the PDF at http://www.mediafire.com/?oc03a41rln8agss
It also includes IE9 and Safari, basicly found that Opera is the fastest stable, but Chrome dev blows it away. Also exposes one of Opera’s massive flaws

Liked your approach to include betas. (:

I got an old PC ~2002 (Asus TUSL2C, Celeron Coppermine 850, 512 MB PC133 Infineon, GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP 8x), Firefox 3.6 in careful config (no Greasemonkey/Adblock) http://retrositecoder.blogspot.com/2010/04/my-new-firefox-36-configuration.html seems like the only useable browser, considering half-way fluent YouTube performance + overall interface responsiveness. Last time I checked Chromium (5, I guess) still lacked option to turn off the cache; freezed my PC when couple of tabs open. Opera 10′s font rendering needs improvement.
