Microsoft Starts A FUD Campaign Against OpenOffice.org

By on October 14th, 2010

It seems like OpenOffice.org is really giving Microsoft nightmares, so much so that that they have put up a video in YouTube doing what they do best – spread FUD against OpenOffice.org (and open-source in general).

Unlike Microsoft’s Office Suite, which can cost even above $400, OpenOffice.org is completely free to download and use.

Here is the Microsoft video in case you wan to see it:

lol, the only one true is that OOo don’t get 100% in support the M$ format conversion which isn’t fail of OOo but M$ which doesn’t support open documents at all

Ha, its just like a political campaign. Its not about what they say, but what they don’t say.

It is really sad to see such a great office suite fall in the hands of oracle that have no idea what they have and will probably do nothing with it. Lets hope libreoffice can put more of a dent in Microsoft’s monopoly of market share

There is a problem in here, and it says it, the users are used to MS Office, but used to the MSOffice 2007? this is a joke. But anyway, is a free world, everyone use the office suite that fills the needs.

    one word: cowards.

This is an absolutely disgusting dribble from Microsoft.

What ever happened to the principle of playing the ball not the man. They should just concentrate on making the best possible software they can not pulling a competitors software down.

I don’t see OpenOffice.org doing that, they just try to provide software everyone can use and share. Something that is far more positive.

Again I say this is disgusting and only coward would resort to this who can’t stand the heat of competition.

Sorry people but as a user of Linux *only* for 10 years, anyone who can’t admit that OO.org is a piece of crap compared to MS Office is lying to themselves or just doesn’t know what they are talking about.

I *don’t* use MS Office, I don’t like MS. However it isn’t because I think OO.org is even in the same league as MS Office. It isn’t.

Of course the quotes in the ad are cherry picked but also they are all likely completely real. At the last company I worked with we had a similar experience trying to use FOSS and specifically OO.org.

As pointed out in the video, MS Office falls to properly open documents created with OOo

I have been a user of StarOffice and then Openoffice.org and I have to say I find MS Office to be a peice of crap compared to OpenOffice. MS has all the tools in the wrong places and gods that ribbon crap in 2010 is just awful.

Just for a concrete feature example. OpenOffice has nice dynamic headers and footers while MS has static header and footer sizes. This feature alone can make it almost impossible for MS Office to properly render OopenOffice created documents. And I personally prefer the OpenOffice Master document for writing books.

So you, see for me MS Office is the poor choice second cousin office suite.

So, being “Linux *only* for 10 years”, just exactly where did you get MS Office for Linux? How else can you compare the two unless you’ve installed it on your system?

OpenOffice is the reason I still have a dual boot system.

Glad to see this video, this means M$ is afraid of OpenOffice.org for real for the fist time.

This could not get any better.

I think that it is no coincidence that I developed piles around the same time that I started to use OO. Now that I’ve switched back to MSO, I sit in comfort again. God bless you, Steve Ballmer.

Truths, half-truths and downright misrepresentation and lies … but that has always been their style to suppress competition.

Of course you can’t open OO documents in M$ faultlessly because M$ tries their damnest to keep it that way but to trumpet their incompatibility shows that they are losing the battle and their cool … so, in reality, all is well and as it should be.

It just also shows that people are basically lazy and resistant to change, it will probably take twenty-five years to reverse the situation where M$ will trumpet that they are compatible with OO and FOSS … if they are still around by then …

“Truths, half-truths and downright misrepresentation and lies … but that has always been their style to suppress competition.”

Which, is not only no different then your kinds way of doing things, but is also not using the boot of the government to force anyone to do anything. Or do you think it’s “Freedom” when .gov punishes Microsoft for being full featured?

This Microsoft Office thing sounds great.
Where can I get a copy for my Linux Desktops?

that is not a video about OpenOffice, Ms Office or other office suites. That is a video about addiction to drugs. Several of those quotes really sound like statements from people who tried to free themselves of cocaine, and schools are supporting this. See how and why at http://stop.zona-m.net/node/198

      Interesting take. :)

Classic FUD! Not only is it FUD, the presentation style has been ripped off from a recent FORD pickup truck TV commercial (ie, all the big block letters popping into view and rotating the presentation area). That is SO Microsoft! They can’t even be creative or innovative when producing FUD.

Personally, I consider the FORD commercial to be quite tasteless (not that potential customers of big pickup trucks would care about that). But for MS to copy that style is an even greater comment on MS’s complete lack of good sense.

This message is based entirely on fear and innuendo. As an independent contractor, I personally used OO to edit documents, presentations, and spreadsheets for a large international plastics/chemicals company for several years without ever receiving complaints. Rather I received compliments re the quality of my work. This was 2 years ago so it was not the most recent MS Office for comparison.

And, btw, I also had extensively used MS Office at a previous employer. But I when I left that employer, I did not want to pay a premium price for an incredibly average (at best) yet bloated software package. So I switched to OO.

Companies mismanaged IT funds, children had trouble changing document formats, and learning something new is bad. That pretty much sums up everything in this FUD ad.

*sighs* So much is wrong about this. For one, the fact that you idiots are all righteously indigent about Microsoft doing to you what you have been doing to Microsoft for years.
Second, I personally use whatever works best (Firefox, Thunderbird, VLC, and whatever else happens to work best), and MS Office kicks OO’s ass. Smoother, faster, more features. The only reason I use OO is it’s on the computers at the MWR.
Finally, the stupidity of Microsoft for even acknowledging OO. Blunder that gives OO publicity. It won’t effect much. Most people will try the “free” competitor and go back to paying for what they want. But some people will join your crowd feces flinging monkeys.
