Wayland May Be Included In Fedora As Early As Fedora 15

By on November 12th, 2010

WaylandDisplayServer_Logo Last week Mark Shuttleworth announced plans for Ubuntu to move away from X towards Wayland. Granted it is a long a time away, but a lot of people commended Canonical for such an important decision, which can potentially take desktop Linux to the next level (graphics wise).

Well here is more good news, from Red Hat this time. In a post in the Fedora mailing list, Adam Jackson of Red Hat, has said that Fedora will eventually switch to Wayland. Like Shuttleworth, he also said that Wayland is not stable enough and did not put an exact time frame. However, he said that Wayland might be packaged in Fedora 15 – for developers to play around with it.

This is what Jackson wrote:

Wayland's not a usable default yet. It'll probably be packaged in F15 as something you can play with. We don't even have a complete list of transition criteria yet, let alone a timeframe for switching the default. But it's likely to happen eventually because it's a serious win for a lot of things, and the downsides are pretty negligible despite the fear from the peanut gallery.

We ALL want something to replace X, I dont think anyone disagrees with that.

But ;when; is the most important part of this whole story.

    Notice the words from jackson:
    EVENTUALLY,
    NOT USABLE DEFAULT YET,
    PROBABLY,
WE DONT HAVE A COMPLETE LIST OF TRANSITION CRITERIA,
    A TIMEFRAME FOR SWITCHING.

That’s how we all feel as devs,… when its ready we will THEN make the switch.

Giving ultimatums is sexy, it gives all this free publicity but also could be a recipe
for disaster if its not ready yet is still pushed through.

Jackson is cautious and boring while Shuttleworth daring and sexy.
    Which attracts more headlines?

Waylands time will come, the only thing I fear is that it will be more locked down t
han X and we will be able to less with it than now. Its only a gut feeling.

11.04 is going to be released in about 5 months. What happens if Wayland is not ready?
Dont go through and you will blasted (as they should for creating hype) or push it through and deal with the fallout.

Flyboy is doing lots of Mac hype these days and this was a perfect example.
He’s also put a hell of lot of pressure on devs like proprietary companies do to meet marketing needs.

Its a different way of working than how many of us are used in FLOSS.
Whether its good or bad is another story but it was totally unecessary really.

No one would have blinked had he said 11.10 (users sure wouldnt have cared)
or even ‘soon’ but 5 months for something which still isnt stable?
Thats how proprietary companies work creating these artificial dates.

Fedora crew is doing it the right way.
Its a marathon, not a sprint.
But sprints are cool and sexy and thats what sells.

I think Shuttleworth also said the same thing. He did not set a specific timeframe and they are not bringing in Wayland in Ubuntu 11.04. He said something like we may see Wayland in 1 year but it will take years for Wayland to completely replace X.Ultimately what we all want is for Wayland to replace X when it is ready. And yes you are right this is a marathon not a sprint. :)
