How to install a FTP server in Windows 7?

By on June 20th, 2009

Having an FTP server along with your webserver has benefits of it's own. You can transfer files very easily to and from your server. Also, editing files on your webserver is a breeze if you enable FTP. We have already shown you how to install the IIS Webserver in Windows 7.

Now, we will tell you how you can install a FTP Web server along with your IIS webserver in Windows 7. Please note that installation of FTP and the IIS Web server are not inter-dependent, which means you need not compulsorily install a webserver in order to install an FTP server and vice-versa.

1. Go to Control Panel > Programs. Then click on "Turn Windows features On or Off". You can check this detailed guide on how to add or remove Windows features in Windows 7.

2. Now from the list that opens, locate the option for Internet Information Services and select FTP Server. Click on OK. Installation will take some time.

3. After your FTP server is installed, you can check the installation using an ftp client by entering localhost as the hostname and 21 as the port number. You should also read the article on how to manage the settings for your FTP server in windows 7.

Some additional steps for configuring the FTP sites and servers to work: (Thanks to Wildfire in the comments)

1. Open the IIS Manager
2. In the tree view (on the far right), right-click “Server (ServerUser)” and select “Add FTP Site…”
3. Follow the wizard to configure the FTP server.

Once you've done this, IIS will have your FTP server listed under Web Sites so you can configure it.

hepl i get this erro message when i do a test

The server is configured to use pass-through authentication with a built-in account to access the specified physical path. However, IIS Manager cannot verify whether the built-in account has access. Make sure that the application pool identity has Read access to the physical path. If this server is joined to a domain, and the application pool identity is NetworkService or LocalSystem, verify that $ has Read access to the physical path. Then test these settings again.

how can i fix this issue

    Thanks

Is this available on any other Windows versions, or just Windows 7? I was hoping to be able to install an FTP server on my Vista computer.

This seems to leave out a very very important step… you have to do a few things after installing IIS and the FTP portion:

    1. Open the IIS Manager
    2. In the tree view (on the far right), right-click “Server (ServerUser)” and select “Add FTP Site…”
    3. Follow the wizard to configure the FTP server.

Once you’ve done this, IIS will have your FTP server listed under Web Sites so you can configure it.

If you read properly, we have included a link to another article at the end of the above that takes care of How to manage settings for an IIS web server and FTP server in Windows 7: http://digitizor.com/2009/06/20/manage-settings-iis-web-server-ftp-server-in-windows-7/

@dkd903: Wrong. Perhaps you should read both articles again. Neither one covers the 3 steps I mentioned. I followed the “How to install IIS with FTP” to the letter and was confused when I got to the “How to manage…” doc because I still didn’t have an FTP server listed in IIS.

In the end, it didn’t end up making a difference. I could never get IIS to accept connections so I dropped it completely and had a Filezilla FTP server setup and working in 30 seconds.

          I’m with you. Same experience.

I got filezilla too, but it is giving me this report:

          Connecting to probe.filezilla-project.org
Response: 220 FZ router and firewall tester ready
          USER FileZilla
          Response: 331 Give any password.
          PASS 3.3.5.1
          Response: 230 logged on.
Checking for correct external IP address
          IP 74.126…. he-bcg-cdb-cdd
          Response: 200 OK
          PREP 1998
Response: 200 Using port 1998, data token 1387418360
          PORT 74,126,…… 206
          Response: 200 PORT command successful
          LIST
          Response: 150 opening data connection

However it is not working… would you be able to give me an advice please?

This is a very good question. ever since I installed Windows 7 on my machine I feel as if I stepped in Narnia or something. I had to install a simpler theme just to realize where the menus are. It’s all so twisted. I miss my XP.

FTP will not be configurable (wont see a Internet Information Services Manager in the Administrative tools) if you dont also turn on IIS Management: expand the Web management tools node and check IIS Management console as well as the FTP service. Good tip!
