How To Install Gnome 3 Shell in Ubuntu Karmic Koala

Recently, we wrote an article giving you a visual tour of Gnome 3 Shell. If you want to experience it first hand, we will tell you what you how to do it in this article. Just to start off here is a screenshot of the Gnome 3 Shell:

Note: Gnome-Shell is still in the development stage and there is always the possibility of something breaking.

1. Open terminal and run the command below to install the Gnome Shell

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

2. After the installaton is done you can start it using the command below in terminal

gnome-shell --replace

3. If you have intel graphics and get just a blank screen after the above command run the command given below before the command in step 2.

export GNOME_SHELL_DISABLE_TFP=1

just log out and login again and you will get back gnome panel

I think we still need to go a long way to gnome 3. Gnome has grown in the past and I hope gnome 3 will reduce the overload.

This is actually really nice. Just sorta flip your mouse up and to the left and then mash down, and it all pops out.

People will bitch and moan, but this is actually really productive. Its good to see linux desktops not trying to do faux windows or faux mac. This is unique and quite thoughtful. I like it.

Still needs some work though, theres no preferences menus (kind of a show stopper) or anything yet, but hey, this isnt even alpha yet and I can already see myself using it.

As a mac user by trade, big thumbs up gnome guys. My grandmother could ‘get’ this setup, and thats whats important. Not what us geeks think, but what our tech clueless grandmas think. I like this a lot.

its good to see someone who likes it. after reading those comments in http://digitizor.com/?p=4872 i was getting the feeling that noone is gonna like gnome 3 :)

Finally a WM that honors my tablet! Just pointing at a corner and everything pops down in an organized way makes me put the trackball back in its cage :)

hmm… when I exited from gnome-shell in Ubuntu 9.10, my window manager looked completed screwed up.
