WiGig Alliance releases detailed specifications for its 60 GHz wireless technology, promises to support 7 Gbps transfer speeds
The WiGig or Wireless Gigabit Alliance completed the initial set of specifications for its 60GHz Wireless Technology, which is all set to raise the bar for wireless connectivity to new heights. The WiGig wireless technology will be using the frequency of 60 GHz in order to communicate as compared to the current best wireless technology - Wi-Fi’ s 2.4GHz/5GHz. And will support enhanced data transfer rates of up to 7Gbps (which is almost 70 times faster than the Wi-Fi’s maximum transfer speed), thanks to the use of new, ultra-dense format. It will also be fully backward compatible (read will work with slower and ageing Wi-Fi). With speeds reaching as high as this, we will finally be able to stream HD videos wirelessly or have stuffs like wireless HDMIs.
This Wi-Fi killer is now being backed by many industry giants like AMD, NVIDIA and it is pretty evident that it will be able to get the attention of rest of the players sooner or later. The WiGig Alliance, however, could not confirm anything regarding the availability of any prototype devices supporting this technology in recent future. So we guess, there is still some time left before we can utter - “May the good old Wi-Fi rest in peace”.
