At the Computex conference in Taipei, Google vice president of product management Sundar Pichai announced that the Google Chrome OS will be released this fall. Chrome OS is a unique take on the user interface by Google where the main focus is on the browser. It is based on Ubuntu with a custom interface made from its browser Chrome.

This is what Sundar Pichai said:

We are working on bringing the device later this fall. We expect it to reach millions of users on day one.

With Google's other OS, Android, falling short in tablets, Chrome OS may become the OS of choice for many tablet manufacturers. It has been reported that Google is already working on ARM and Tegra 2 support for Chrome OS. Google recent announcement of its Web Stores and Cloud Printing are just some indications of the attention Google is paying to Chrome OS.

The concept of putting the Web ahead of the desktop is a very new direction for an OS and perhaps, the main challenge that Chrome OS may face is in getting the users familiar concept.
