LinkedIn Registers 76% Growth In India; Touches 9M Users Mark – Worry For Facebook?

By on March 23rd, 2011

LinkedIn recently announced on their official blog that their registered users' count has crossed 100 million worldwide. It won't be fair to compare this to Facebook's 500 Million plus user base as LinkedIn is a dedicated social network only for professionals and has a smaller target group than that of Facebook.

Out of LinkedIn's 100 Million users, India alone accounts for 9 Million users - a cool 9 percent of LinkedIn's total user base. And, this very well explains the fact that LinkedIn has Developer and Marketing offices in India. Not only this, India happens to be the third fastest growing country in LinkedIn with a growth of a whopping 76 percent.

Well, does this mean Facebook should worry? Not at all. Facebook's target group is very different and has a wider reach with users ranging from ages with 13 years to 80 years. In a way you could see LinkedIn's target group as a sub set of the target group of Facebook. Do let us know what you feel about the growth of LinkedIn in India in the comments section.

linkedin and facebook can live well together. People are on facebook to share experiences with friends, play games and (for someone) to promote their business (company and products pages, invitation to events). They are on linked in to share their resume, look for business partners and somewhat promote their business. That’s the only overlap I see but as it’s about advertising it’s not a problem: companies always advertise on all the available media.

Would facebook try to add some resume specific features? Maybe, but that kind of message is going to be lost in the noise of all the pictures, pokes, status updates, chats, etc. It’s probably not appropriate to mix a resume with casual comments on somebody’s funny picture at a club yesterday night.

Would linkedin try to become more like facebook? They already moved a little in that direction but I don’t believe they’ll go all the way along: it will dilute the business like nature of the network and start suffering from the same problem above.
