Frank Karlitschek has just announced the release of ownCloud 1.0, What is ownCloud? Here is Frank's very own word:
ownCloud is a central place where you can store your files and documents. You donĀ“t have to upload your personal data to central closed services like Google Docs, Dropbox or Ubuntu One.
In short, ownCloud is an open-source project which enables anyone with some webspace to make their own cloud storage. (Hence the name own-cloud :p)
Although closely tied with KDE, ownCloud can be accessed from any modern operating system without any special client. And all the server needs is PHP.
Here are the features that ownCloud 1.0 currently has:
- You can access your files via WebDAV from Linux, Mac and Windows Desktops.
- On Linux you can use the KDE KIO-Slaves or mount it via FUSE into your home directory.
- The data transfer is encrypted if your web-server supports SSL.
- ownCloud support the Open Collaboration Services API so your ownCloud can push notification to your KDE Desktop.
You can download ownCloud and find more information at owncloud.org.
