yahoo logoYahoo! Geocities is something which I bet every one who has been on the internet since ‘97 will know about.  Geocities is a free service from Yahoo which helps you with a free web site and features that include a easy-to-use site building tool, a customisation tool and more. Geocities has helped many people create businesses and identities on the Web since the time when getting personal webspace was not very cheap. But, now Yahoo! has decided to discontinue the free service.

Geocities help center mentions they are enforcing the Geocities discontinuation in order to allow  them to focus on helping their customers explore and build new relationships online in other ways. Yahoo! Geocities will be closed later this year. New Registrations for Geocities have already been closed by Yahoo. Existing GeoCities customers need not worry as Yahoo! will provide more details about closing GeoCities and how to save your site data this summer, and we will update the help center with more details at that time. Few years back, Yahoo! had done a similar stint when they closed down their Yahoo Photos services and provided users an option ti transfer all of their photos at Yahoo! Photos to Flickr.

If you still want to host sites with Yahoo! you need to look at other options like Yahoo! Web Hosting which includes a personalized domain name and matching email, new site building tools, unlimited disk space and bandwidth, premium customer support, and more. You also can now use Yahoo! profiles which is a free service to manage your identity, activities, and interests across the web.
