Eric Schmidt: Apple’s Lawsuits Against Android Are Because Of Jealousy And A Lack Of Innovation

By Ricky on July 19th, 2011

With more than 550 million devices being activated everyday, Android is no doubt on a roll. However, the recent ruling by the ITC that HTC violates two Apple patents has put a doubt on the future of Android in the US.

Today, at Google’s Mobile Revolution conference in Tokyo, Google Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt made an attack on Apple and its litigious ways. He said that Apple’s lawsuits against Android are a result of their lack of innovation and jealousy because of Android’s success.

This is what Schmidt said:

The big news in the past year has been the explosion of Google Android handsets and this means our competitors are responding. Because they are not responding with innovation, they're responding with lawsuits. We have not done anything wrong and these lawsuits are just inspired by our success.

Eric Schmidt also said that Google will support HTC against Apple and that they are confident of winning. This should come as good news to not only HTC, but all the other Android device manufacturers as well. Schmidt refused to go into detail of how they will help HTC though.

Eric Schmidt's attack on Apple comes after Apple filed a complaint to the US ITC against HTC, one of the largest Android device manufacturers, on the ground that Android violates two Apple patents. An initial ruling by the ITC favored Apple and said that HTC is indeed violating two core Apple patents. Apple is seeking a ban on the import of all Android devices manufactured by HTC into the US.

The ITC will give final ruling in December and if Apple wins, it will put a very big question mark over the future of not only HTC but every Android manufacturers in the US.
